Fencing in Vero Beach

Fences in Vero Beach depend on whether you are in the city, the county or a barrier island town, plus HOA rules and drainage canal easements.

County
Indian River County
Permits
Usually the City of Vero Beach for addresses inside city limits, and Indian River County for unincorporated areas. Confirm for your address.

Vero Beach owners put up fences for pools, pets, privacy and to keep storm debris out. Older neighborhoods near downtown often have narrow lots with alleys. Mainland subdivisions west of town, many built on former citrus groves, often back up to drainage canals. On the barrier island, oceanfront and lagoon lots bring their own limits.

Permits in the city, county and towns

Most new fences need a permit. Inside city limits that goes through the City of Vero Beach. Unincorporated areas go through Indian River County, which sets height limits that are usually lower in front yards. Indian River Shores and Orchid have their own rules. Corner lots often have visibility limits near intersections. Confirm the limits for your lot before buying materials.

Drainage canals and easements

Many mainland lots west of Vero Beach back up to canals managed by water control districts, such as the Indian River Farms Water Control District, or have drainage and utility easements along the back line. Fences inside an easement may not be allowed, or may need to be removable for maintenance. Check your survey and ask the district or the county before building near a canal.

Oceanfront and lagoon lots

On oceanfront lots, fences seaward of the state Coastal Construction Control Line can need state review, and dune areas may be protected. Lagoon lots may have view limits near the water. Salt air rusts steel quickly, so many island owners pick aluminum or vinyl with stainless or coated fasteners.

Pools, HOAs and digging

A fence used as a pool barrier must meet Florida pool safety rules, including self closing, self latching gates. Most gated communities approve fence style, color and height. Call 811 before digging, and on septic lots find the drain field first, since many mainland lots in the county still use septic and a post through a drain line is a costly mistake. Iron stains from irrigation wells also mark white vinyl fences, so aim sprinkler heads away from the fence line.

Fencing questions in Vero Beach

Do I need a permit for a fence in Vero Beach?

In most cases yes. Inside city limits, check with the City of Vero Beach. Unincorporated areas go through Indian River County, and Indian River Shores and Orchid have their own rules. Each sets height limits for front and back yards. The contractor usually pulls the permit. Check the limits before you buy materials.

Can I build a fence along the canal behind my Vero Beach home?

Maybe not right at the edge. Many mainland lots back up to canals managed by water control districts or have drainage easements along the back line. Fences in those easements may not be allowed, or may need to be removable. Check your survey and ask the district or the county before you build.

Can I put a fence on my oceanfront Vero Beach lot?

There are extra limits near the beach. Fences seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line can need state review, and dune vegetation may be protected. Your town or county may add rules. Ask the Florida DEP and your local building office before planning a fence near the dune.

What fence material lasts near the ocean in Vero Beach?

Salt air on the barrier island rusts steel quickly. Aluminum or vinyl with stainless or coated hardware usually lasts longer near the water. Wood can work but needs more upkeep. Ask the contractor what fasteners they use and what has held up on nearby island lots.
