Tree Service in Vero Beach

Vero Beach has big old oaks near downtown, palms and sea grapes on the island, and mangroves on the lagoon. Each comes with different rules.

County
Indian River County
Permits
Usually the City of Vero Beach for addresses inside city limits, and Indian River County for unincorporated areas. Confirm for your address.

Older neighborhoods near downtown Vero Beach have large live oaks, many planted decades ago, that shade streets and roofs. On the barrier island, sea grapes, palms and native coastal trees are common. Along the lagoon, many lots have mangroves. Before any cutting, it helps to know which office has a say.

City, county and town rules

Inside Vero Beach city limits, the City of Vero Beach has its own tree and landscape rules. Unincorporated areas follow Indian River County rules, and Indian River Shores and Orchid have their own. Some of these local rules protect large or specimen trees, especially during construction, while others leave established home lots mostly alone. Call the right office before removing a large tree. Florida law also says a local government cannot require a permit to remove a residential tree if you have written documentation from an ISA certified arborist or a Florida licensed landscape architect that the tree is a danger.

Mangroves and oceanfront plants

Mangroves along the Indian River Lagoon are protected by Florida law. Trimming must follow state rules on height and method, and removal is tightly limited. On oceanfront lots, dune vegetation seaward of the state Coastal Construction Control Line can also be protected. Ask the tree company whether they know these rules, and check with the Florida DEP before working near the water or the dune.

Old oaks and storm prep

Frances and Jeanne in 2004 brought down many large trees in Vero Beach. Thinning and removing dead wood well before hurricane season helps a canopy let wind through. Large oaks close to older homes near downtown may have roots under the foundation or old sewer laterals, so removal near the house takes care.

HOAs

Many gated communities in the area require approval before removing any tree, and may require a replacement.

Tree service questions in Vero Beach

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Vero Beach?

It depends on where you are. Inside city limits, check with the City of Vero Beach. Unincorporated areas follow Indian River County rules, and Indian River Shores and Orchid have their own. Some rules protect large trees, especially during construction. If an ISA certified arborist documents that a tree is a danger, Florida law limits what a local government can require.

Can I trim mangroves on my lagoon lot in Vero Beach?

Mangroves are protected under Florida law. Limited trimming is often allowed if it follows state rules on height and method, and some trimming must be done by a qualified professional. Removal is tightly restricted. Contact the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before any work and make sure the tree company knows the rules.

Can I clear sea grapes on my oceanfront Vero Beach lot?

Be careful. Dune vegetation seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line can be protected by state rules, and your town or county may have its own. Sea grapes also help hold the dune in place. Ask the Florida DEP and your local building office before trimming or removing plants near the beach.

Should I remove the big oak next to my older Vero Beach home?

Not always. A healthy oak can often be thinned and pruned to reduce storm risk. If it is dead, leaning, hollow or damaging the foundation or sewer line, removal may make sense. An ISA certified arborist can assess it. Check city or county rules for large trees before removing it.
