Septic and Drain Field Service in Stuart
Septic in Stuart is tied up with Martin County's push to move older neighborhoods to sewer and the health of the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.

- Permits
- Usually the City of Stuart for addresses inside city limits, and Martin County for unincorporated areas. Confirm for your address.
Many older Stuart area neighborhoods were built on septic tanks, often on small lots close to the St. Lucie River, the Manatee Pocket or canals. Nutrients from septic systems near the water have been a long running concern in Martin County, which is why the county has been moving neighborhoods to central sewer.
Connect to Protect and your tank
Martin County's septic to sewer effort is called Connect to Protect. Projects have included Port Salerno and New Monrovia, North River Shores, Old Palm City and Coral Gardens, and the Town of Sewall's Point has run its own conversion work. If your neighborhood is on the schedule, it may not make sense to spend heavily on a new drain field right before sewer arrives. On the other hand, a failing system cannot just wait. Ask Martin County Utilities when sewer is expected on your street and what the connection will cost you, then decide with a septic contractor whether a repair can bridge the gap. When you do connect, the old tank has to be properly abandoned, which is usually pumped and then removed or filled.
High water and drain fields near the river
Low lots near the river and lagoon often have a high water table, especially in the rainy season. A drain field that sits too close to groundwater stops working well, and you may see slow drains or soggy spots after heavy rain. That is a design problem more than a pumping problem, so ask the contractor to explain the cause before you pay for repeated pump outs.
Permits and the newer state rules
Since 2021, septic permits in Florida are handled through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection rather than the Department of Health. Repairs and new systems need a permit. State lagoon protection rules passed in 2023 push new systems in parts of the Indian River Lagoon basin toward nutrient reducing designs where sewer is not available. Whether that applies to a repair at your address depends on location and the type of work, so confirm with DEP before you get quotes, and expect those systems to cost more than a conventional one.

Septic service questions in Stuart
Is my Stuart neighborhood scheduled for septic to sewer?
Martin County publishes its Connect to Protect plan and schedule, and it changes over time. Projects have included Port Salerno, New Monrovia, North River Shores, Old Palm City and Coral Gardens. Sewall's Point runs its own program. Call Martin County Utilities or check the county's program page for your street before you spend on a major septic repair.
Should I fix my drain field if sewer is coming to my street?
It depends on timing and how bad the failure is. If sewer is a year or two out, a smaller repair may get you there. If it is many years out or not planned, a proper repair is likely needed. A failing system near the river is a health problem, so do not just wait. Ask a septic contractor and Martin County Utilities, then compare.
Who issues septic permits in Martin County now?
Florida moved the septic program from the Department of Health to the Department of Environmental Protection in 2021. Repairs, new systems and abandonments generally go through DEP. The septic contractor usually handles the application. If your property is near the Indian River Lagoon or the St. Lucie River, ask whether nutrient reducing rules apply to your job.
Why does my drain field flood in the summer near the St. Lucie River?
Low lots near the river often have groundwater close to the surface in the rainy season. When the water table rises into the drain field, the soil cannot absorb wastewater, so drains slow and the yard gets soggy. Pumping helps only for a while. A contractor can explain whether a raised or redesigned field is needed, and what permits that would require.
