Septic Tank and Drain Field Service in Fort Pierce
Fort Pierce has neighborhoods still on septic inside the city and many more just outside it. Being close to the Indian River Lagoon shapes the rules and the repairs.

- Usually the City of Fort Pierce for addresses inside city limits, and St. Lucie County for unincorporated areas. Confirm for your address.
The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority provides sewer to much of the city and has been expanding into older neighborhoods that were built on septic. FPUA has estimated that roughly 3,000 households in its wastewater service area still use septic tanks. Outside city limits, in unincorporated St. Lucie County north and west of town, septic is the norm in many areas.
The lagoon and the water table
Much of Fort Pierce sits low and close to the Indian River Lagoon, Taylor Creek and the inlet. A high water table means less soil between the drain field and groundwater, which is why the lagoon gets so much attention in septic rules. Florida's 2023 lagoon protection law pushes nutrient reducing septic systems for new systems in parts of the lagoon basin where sewer isn't available. If your system has to be replaced, ask the business whether that applies to your lot, because it can change the cost a lot.
Older Fort Pierce lots are often small, with the tank close to the house and the drain field under the back yard. Big trees and old clay pipe between the house and the tank are a common source of roots and backups.
Connecting to FPUA sewer
If FPUA has run sewer into your neighborhood, compare the cost of a repair with the cost of connecting. FPUA has used grant funding at times to lower what customers pay to convert, so ask the utility what's offered now. The work on your property is usually a plumber's job. See plumbing in Fort Pierce.
Permits
Septic repairs and replacements are permitted through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which took over the program from the Department of Health in 2021. A sewer connection inside city limits also involves FPUA and usually a plumbing permit through the City of Fort Pierce Building Department. In unincorporated areas the county handles the building side.
Backups in older homes can also mean mold under the floor or in walls. See mold help in Fort Pierce if there's been water damage. General information is on the septic page, and the city overview is on the Fort Pierce area page.
Septic service questions in Fort Pierce
Is my Fort Pierce neighborhood getting FPUA sewer?
FPUA has been expanding sewer into older neighborhoods for years and has more areas under evaluation, but the schedule changes with funding. Call the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority with your address and ask whether sewer is available or planned, and what conversion currently costs. That answer can change whether repairing your septic makes sense.
Will I need a special septic system near the Indian River Lagoon?
Possibly. A 2023 state law pushes nutrient reducing systems for new septic systems in parts of the lagoon basin where sewer isn't available, and rules for repairs and replacements depend on location. Many Fort Pierce lots are in that area. Ask the septic business and the Department of Environmental Protection what applies to your specific property.
Why does my older Fort Pierce home keep backing up into the tub?
In older homes it's often roots in a clay or cast iron line between the house and the tank, or a tank that needs pumping. Sometimes it's the drain field. A septic business can pump and inspect the tank, and a camera inspection of the line shows whether roots or broken pipe are the cause.
Who do I call about septic in unincorporated areas outside Fort Pierce?
Permits for septic repairs and replacements go through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, the same as in the city. Building permits for related work go through St. Lucie County rather than the City of Fort Pierce. A registered septic contractor can usually tell you exactly which forms your address needs.
