Water Softeners and Filtration in Fort Pierce

In Fort Pierce, water quality complaints often come from the pipes inside an older house rather than from the water itself. Sorting out which one you have saves money.

The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority supplies water to most of the city. Outside FPUA's area, in parts of unincorporated St. Lucie County west of town, homes may be on private wells. And in the older neighborhoods, decades old galvanized pipe can change what comes out of the tap no matter how good the water was at the meter.

FPUA water

FPUA treats and tests its water and publishes an annual water quality report. Start there. It shows hardness and what's in the water as it leaves the utility. If your problem is scale or the taste of disinfectant, a softener or a carbon filter may be all you need.

When the house is the problem

If your water looks brown or rusty mostly when a tap first opens, or only on one side of the house, old galvanized supply pipe is a likely cause. A filter at the main can catch some of the rust, but it won't fix low pressure or leaks. In that case a repipe, not a treatment system, may be the real answer. See plumbing in Fort Pierce.

Homes built before the mid 1980s can also have lead solder on copper joints, and very old homes may have lead service pieces. If you're worried, ask the utility about testing and use a filter certified to reduce lead for drinking water. Lead isn't something to guess about.

Wells west of town and on the edges

On private wells in unincorporated areas, the usual issues are iron, hardness and sulfur smell, much like the rest of the county. Get a lab test first. A rotten egg smell in hot water only is often the water heater's anode, not the well. See water heaters in Fort Pierce.

Beachside

On Hutchinson Island, salt spray spots on windows and cars come from the air, not the tap, so a softener won't help with that. Condos usually share a water supply, and many associations limit what owners can add to the plumbing, so check before buying a whole unit system.

The general guide is on the water treatment page and the city overview is on the Fort Pierce area page. Tell us whether you're on FPUA or a well and what you're seeing, and we pass it to one independent local business.

Check before you hireIf the job ties into your plumbing, ask who holds the plumbing license and look it up at myfloridalicense.com. Ask for proof of insurance and written water test results.

Water treatment questions in Fort Pierce

Is FPUA water hard enough to need a softener?

It depends on your tolerance for scale. The Fort Pierce Utilities Authority's annual water quality report lists the hardness, so check that number first. Many homes do fine with a carbon filter for taste. If you see heavy scale on fixtures and inside the water heater, a softener can help.

My Fort Pierce tap water is brown when I first turn it on. Is that the water or my pipes?

If it clears after running a bit, or happens only at some faucets, it's often old galvanized pipe inside the house rusting from within. If every faucet is brown all the time, call FPUA, since it could be a main issue. A plumber can tell you which it is and whether a repipe makes more sense than a filter.

Should I worry about lead in an older Fort Pierce home?

It's worth checking. Homes built before the mid 1980s can have lead solder on copper joints, and very old homes may have lead in fixtures or service parts. Ask the Fort Pierce Utilities Authority about testing, and use a drinking water filter certified for lead reduction while you find out. Don't rely on a seller's test kit for this.

Can I put a whole house softener in my Hutchinson Island condo?

Often not without approval. Condos usually share water lines, and associations may limit equipment in units because of space, weight or leak risk. An under sink filter is usually simpler. Check with the association first, then ask the business what fits your unit's utility closet.
